Personal Training for Beginners: What Your First Session Looks Like
By Isaac Akinsete, BSc Health and Performance Science, licensed personal trainer and Hyrox & CrossFit coach in Berlin · Updated · 5 min read
THE SHORT ANSWER
Your first personal training session usually starts with a conversation about your goals, history and schedule, followed by a warm-up, a check of basic movements like squatting, hinging, pushing and pulling, and a manageable workout. It should leave you challenged but not wrecked. Bring comfortable clothes, trainers and water.
Almost everyone feels nervous before their first session. Here's exactly what to expect, so you can walk in relaxed.
What happens in a first session
- A conversation. Your goals, training history, any injuries, and how many sessions fit your week.
- A warm-up. Light cardio and mobility to get you moving.
- A movement check. Squat, hinge, push, pull and carry patterns, so your trainer knows where to start and what to work on.
- A short workout. Challenging but manageable, with plenty of coaching on technique.
- Next steps. How your plan will look and how you'll measure progress.
What to bring
- Comfortable training clothes and trainers
- A water bottle and a small towel
- A light meal or snack 1–2 hours before
- Any relevant information about injuries or health conditions
Will it be really hard?
It shouldn't be. A good trainer works at your level — the goal of session one is to learn, not to prove anything. You may feel some muscle soreness 24–72 hours later; that's normal and fades as your body adapts.
"I'm too unfit for a personal trainer"
That's exactly who personal training is for. In 1-on-1 training every exercise is scaled to you, technique is corrected in real time, and nobody is watching except your coach. You don't need to get fit before you start — that's the trainer's job.
How often should beginners train?
Two sessions per week is the sweet spot for most beginners: frequent enough to build momentum and learn quickly, with enough recovery in between. Add daily walking and you have a strong foundation.
