Hyrox vs CrossFit: Which Is Right for You?
By Isaac Akinsete, BSc Health and Performance Science, licensed personal trainer and Hyrox & CrossFit coach in Berlin · Updated · 5 min read
THE SHORT ANSWER
Hyrox is a standardised fitness race — 8 × 1 km runs with eight functional stations — that's the same at every event, so it rewards running endurance and pacing. CrossFit is constantly varied training that includes Olympic weightlifting and gymnastics, so it rewards broad skill. Choose Hyrox for a clear race goal; choose CrossFit for variety and skills.
Hyrox vs CrossFit at a glance
| Hyrox | CrossFit | |
|---|---|---|
| Format | Same race every time: 8 × 1 km run + 8 stations | Constantly varied workouts (WODs) |
| Key skills | Running, functional strength, pacing | Olympic lifting, gymnastics, conditioning |
| Technical barrier | Low — simple movements | Higher — complex lifts and gymnastics |
| Measuring progress | Easy — compare race times directly | Benchmark workouts and lifts |
| Best for | Goal-driven people who like a clear target | People who love variety and learning skills |
What is Hyrox?
Hyrox is a fitness race: eight 1 km runs, each followed by a station — SkiErg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls. Because the format never changes, it's easy to train for specifically and to compare your times. Roughly half the race is running, so endurance matters a lot.
What is CrossFit?
CrossFit is a training methodology built on constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. Workouts mix weightlifting (like cleans and snatches), gymnastics (like pull-ups and handstands) and conditioning. It builds broad, all-round fitness and a strong community, but has a steeper technical learning curve.
Which should you choose?
- Choose Hyrox if you want a clear race goal, enjoy running, or are newer to complex lifting.
- Choose CrossFit if you love variety, want to learn skills like Olympic lifts and gymnastics, and enjoy group training.
- Do both if you can — CrossFit builds strength and skill that carry over to Hyrox, and Hyrox builds the engine that makes CrossFit workouts easier.
